With sales surpassing US$6 billion in 2020, China-based online fashion company Shein may be the most visited and lucrative fashion site in the world. But early this month, it was sued by the famous Dr Martens boots maker Airwair International for allegedly infringing their trademark and selling counterfeit products on its website. Shein denies the claim and insists it has “deep respect” for artists and designers. This dispute shows that the consumer shift to e-commerce has prompted brands to vigilantly protect their reputations online, and IP assets cannot be neglected.
