Did you know that KASS International has a training department set up to enlighten individuals and corporations on the many aspects of Intellectual Property (IP) Rights? Well, we do! As a matter of fact, KASS has already conducted training sessions for several universities, private research institutions, and business organizations in the past few years (Check out our 2009 list of talks for examples of some of these sessions).
Recently, we were invited by the Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals (IPharm) to give a training session on “The Patent System: Understanding the Basics and Fundamentals”.
Aiming to instill awareness of Intellectual Property (IP) Rights, KASS Managing Director, P. Kandiah, started the day off by giving pointers on the importance of obtaining IP rights for R&D results, what can and cannot be patented and some basics on the procedures to obtain IP rights.
His next session covered the creation of inventions (whether planned or unplanned), patent searches, and the steps involved in getting a patent granted. Following this, he gave participants a glimpse into the process of drafting a patent.
Ramakrishna Damodharan, Director of Patents Division at KASS, was up next. He discussed issues that should be taken into consideration before a patent is filed, covering everything from the applicant’s eligibility to file (based on the Malaysian Patent Act), cost of filing and the location of intended markets, to making educated guesses on where likely infringers would be based, before moving on to the types of applications they can file, what it means when they receive objections and office actions and how to respond to them.
The talk concluded with Ramakrishna giving participants tips on how to commercially exploit their inventions once a patent has been granted. He elaborated on what patent owners could do to optimize the potential of their R&D results and what measures to take to prevent copycats from infringing their patent.
KASS conducts customised IP training sessions, workshops and seminars according to the requirements of our clients. If you are interested, do feel free to contact us for a non-obligatory one hour discussion.
